Aadhaar Virtual ID: In a bid to make Aadhaar Biometric Data more secured, UIDAI has put in place a multi-layered privacy protection for Aadhaar Holders by launching much-awaited facility of Generation of Virtual ID.
What is Aadhaar Virtual ID (VID)?
Aadhaar Virtual ID is a temporary 16 digit random number mapped with the Aadhaar number which can be at the time of authentication. That means Aadhaar holders need not to provide Aadhaar number and can quote VID in place of it. The same can be used for authentication at the time of opening of new banks accounts, mobile sim card verification etc.
Currently the Aadhaar holders can generate the VID through UIDAI website and can only be used to request an address change in the Aadhaar database. Service Providers will soon incorporate the new codes (APIs) in their systems and then can start accepting VID in place of Aadhaar number.
Government is planning to make the aadhaar virtual ID mandatory for authentication from 1st June 2018.
